What is Wellness? 

Wellness is a multi-faceted state of holistic health (whole health), including physical, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental influences. Wellness is not passive. It is the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Another way to understand wellness is to think of it on a continuum. On one end, people with poor health engage with medical help to treat illness. They interact re-actively with doctors when they are ill. On the opposite end of the continuum people who are wellness minded, behave pro-actively, focusing on prevention and maximizing their health and vitality. For example, they adopt lifestyles that prevent disease. They take a self-management approach to health.

OUR MISSION

Avenues to Wellness was established by the Frank R. Howard Foundation in August 2013. ATW is a community-based wellness program offering free-of-charge health education to Willits and the surrounding areas. We are committed to a “Whole Health” approach to healthcare, addressing the full range of physical, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. We offer a monthly speaker series with local health educators presenting a variety of health topics. We teach a chronic disease self-management class addressing a wide range of health conditions.  We maintain an active Facebook page and website where we promote and support our whole health approach. ATW also collaborates with other agencies/partners to maximize the health of our community.
